Crimson, 12" by 14" on Birchwood panel, mixed media.
The idea of this piece came from a photo of my friend’s daughter, Crimson. What caught my eye was not the sunflower, but the stick that was in Crimson’s hand. I have two sons, and at that age they would have already beheaded the flower from its stalk with their mighty sword (stick). For Crimson, the flower was a thing of awe and beauty, and not an evil enemy that one must transform their body into a dangerous weapon in order to defeat it.
